Can dogs eat broccoli?

Broccoli is a superfood for us humans. It’s packed full of fibre, low in fat and great for vitamin C. If you have some spare after dinner, can you feed it to your dog?

Like humans, dogs are omnivores. This means they can digest vegetables and fruit, as well as meat. It benefits them to ingest some of the vitamins found in these foods, although some kinds of fruit and veg are not suitable for dogs as they can cause upset to their digestive systems. So always check before giving them a new type of fruit or vegetable.

Can dogs eat broccoli?

Yes, dogs can eat broccoli, both raw and cooked, but only in small amounts. Broccoli contains isothiocyanates which can cause gastro issues in dogs. To avoid problems, it should only be fed as a maximum of 10% of your dog’s daily food intake. Dogs react differently to eating broccoli, with some more sensitive than others. Give them a tiny bit of broccoli to begin with, and then you can increase the amount gradually.

Broccoli should always be fed as an ‘extra’ to your dog’s everyday food. Nutritionists recommend that treats or extras only take up 10% of their daily calorie needs anyway, so feed sparingly.

Cooked or raw, only feed it without seasoning because salt is poisonous to dogs. If you have a smaller dog, make sure you cut the broccoli into tiny pieces to avoid it becoming a choking hazard.
